Who is Most at Risk?
People near the source of a radiation release are at greatest risk. Those outdoors at the time of an incident, and anyone who comes into contact with contaminated materials, food or water, may be exposed. Emergency responders are also at elevated risk.
Before
- Keep a battery-powered or wind-up radio at home to receive official instructions without power or internet.
- Know how to shelter in place quickly: identify a room with few windows and doors that can be sealed.
- Keep a supply of tape and plastic sheeting that could be used to seal gaps in windows and doors if needed.
- Keep a supply of bottled water in case tap water becomes affected.
- Be aware that officials may issue guidance on stable iodine tablets in certain radiation scenarios — do not take these without official instruction.
- Stay informed through HM Government of Gibraltar and GBC Radio.

Go in
The most important thing to do if you are told you are near a radiation emergency is go indoors as soon as you can and stay there. Close the doors and windows and stay as far away from external walls as possible.
Stay in
Staying indoors reduces your exposure to any radiation outside. Turn off all fans and air conditioning and close all external doors, windows and vents where possible. You will be given advice on what to do next. You may need to stay indoors for one to two days.
Tune in
Monitor the news and follow official advice on www.gibraltar.gov.gi for what to do next. Any changes to advice will be communicated to you via official sources — this may be via the radio, television, internet, social media or the police.
Other important precautions
- If you were outdoors during a release: remove outer clothing and seal it in a plastic bag. Shower with soap and water — do not use conditioner in your hair. Do not scrub skin.
- Do not take iodine tablets unless specifically instructed to do so by HM Government of Gibraltar.
What you need to do to protect yourself will depend on where you are in relation to where the radiation emergency is, so it is essential to follow the advice provided where you are. Radiation cannot be seen, heard, smelt, tasted or felt, so it is important that you follow the advice given to you, even if you cannot tell that anything has happened.
After
- Do not return to affected areas until officially confirmed as safe.
- Follow official advice regarding food, water and cleaning procedures.
- If you believe you have been exposed to radiation, contact medical services and follow their guidance.
- Dispose of any items as directed by authorities — do not attempt to clean or decontaminate areas yourself without guidance.
- Monitor your health and attend any health screening offered by the GHA.
